The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has once again shown its unwavering support for grassroots sports development as the 2025 AmuwoGames officially kicked off in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.
The festival, now in its fifth edition, is engaging more than 50,000 residents and 600+ athletes across 16 sporting events, including football, basketball, athletics, swimming, tennis, chess, volleyball, and more, reaffirming its place as one of the state’s leading community sports festivals.
Representing the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, the Director of Sports, Mr. Nunayon Travih, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to nurturing youth through sports, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda.
“The Sports Commission has supported the AmuwoGames from day one. This initiative aligns perfectly with the Governor’s THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritises youth engagement through sports,” Travih said.
“Our coaches and scouts are monitoring the events to identify emerging talents across different age categories. These young athletes represent the future of Lagos and Nigeria.”
Travih also encouraged all participants to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to personal growth, warning against social vices that could derail their sporting or personal development.
The Founder and Chairman of the AmuwoGames Local Organising Committee, Seun Ayeni, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Sports Commission and local authorities for their continuous support since inception, describing the Commission as a vital partner in achieving lasting youth and community development through sports.
This year’s edition carries the bold theme “Cancel Scam Culture,” a call for integrity, discipline, and accountability among young people. Ayeni noted that the festival continues to serve as a platform to channel youthful energy positively while promoting unity, teamwork, and leadership through sports.
Participation in the Games remains completely free, thanks to partner support, with athletes benefiting from medical screenings, technical evaluations, and new prize rewards introduced to motivate consistent excellence.
The festival runs throughout November 2025, culminating in a grand closing ceremony on Saturday, November 23rd, with thousands expected to attend across multiple sporting venues in Amuwo Odofin.
“AmuwoGames has grown into a model for grassroots sports development in Lagos,” Ayeni added. “We are proud of how it continues to transform lives and strengthen communities.”
